A collection of Cochrane’s evocative black and white photographs from 1969 -1986 finds new purpose being paired with the reflections and recollections of Labrador Inuit to create a collaborative portrait of Inuit life at a time of change. With historical context provided in the introduction by Andrea Procter and Cochrane’s essay about the origins of the photographs and their evolving meaning, the reader is invited to experience the poetry and poignancy of the Inuit story, in English and Inuktitut. The forward by Inuk Julius Dicker, mayor of Nain, Labrador, testifies to TautukKonik’s impact.
The book itself is a model of inspired collaboration between Cochrane, Procter, and the Nunatsiavut Creative Group*, which was comprised of eleven Nunatsiavut Inuit. Together they used photographs, local stories, interviews, and even Facebook posts, to communicate Inuit perspective over time of culture, community, history, familial values, and especially connection to Labrador Inuit land.
